Performance of the Lipizzans at Spanish Riding School

Check availability

How do you visit the Spanish Riding School in Vienna?

There are three options: a full 2-hour performance (€35–120, limited dates), a morning exercise session (€18–22, most days September–June), or a 45-minute short performance. Morning exercise is the best value — you see the horses working at close range in the 18th-century Winter Riding Hall and the atmosphere is memorable. Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead. Closed July–August.

What the Spanish Riding School actually is

The Spanish Riding School (Spanische Hofreitschule) is the world’s only institution where the classical Baroque equestrian arts have been preserved in their original form, in an original building, for more than 450 years. The name refers not to the location but to the horses: Spanish horses (Iberian horses) were first brought to Austria in the 16th century and selectively bred with Italian and Austrian stock to create the Lipizzaner breed — white horses that are born dark and lighten with age, now bred almost exclusively at the imperial stud farm at Piber in Styria.

The Winter Riding Hall, designed by Johann Fischer von Erlach and built between 1729 and 1735, is one of the most beautiful interior spaces in Vienna — long, white, with a gallery supported by columns, and the Habsburg imperial box (with the portrait of Emperor Karl VI) at one end. The horses move through it to the accompaniment of Baroque music. Whatever your prior interest in equestrian matters, the combination of architecture, trained animal and music is extraordinary.

What you need to know before you go

Dates: The school operates September through June. Closed July–August (Lipizzaners at Piber stud farm).

Location: Michaelerplatz 1, inside the Hofburg complex. Entrance from Reitschulgasse 2 or Michaelerplatz.

Booking: All tickets must be booked in advance through the official website (srs.at) or authorised ticket agents. Do not buy from touts or third-party resellers near Michaelerplatz — these add unnecessary commissions and sometimes sell invalid tickets.

What to wear: There is no dress code for visitors, but the atmosphere is formal. Hats must be removed on entering the hall.

Your options: which visit type to choose

Full performance (Vorführung)

Duration: approximately 2 hours Price: €35–€120 depending on seat category Frequency: Selected dates throughout the season (approximately 2–4 times per month)

The full performance is the complete experience: all horses performing together to Baroque and classical music, with intricate choreography including the famous Airs Above the Ground (levade, courbette, capriole). The atmosphere is formal — more formal than a ballet, less formal than a state dinner. The opening march, with all riders entering simultaneously, is worth the price alone.

Book 4–6 weeks ahead for weekend performances. Weekday performances are somewhat easier to obtain.

Morning exercise (Morgenarbeit)

Duration: approximately 2 hours (varies) Price: €18–€22 Frequency: Most weekday mornings, September–June (not all days)

Morning exercise is the school’s working session: individual horses and riders train the exercises under instruction from the senior riding masters. It is less theatrical than a performance but more intimate — you are watching a training session, not a show, and the interaction between horse, rider and instructor is visible in a way that a polished performance conceals.

The gallery doors open at 10 am (check the current schedule). The atmosphere is informal by the school’s standards: visitors may move around the gallery, take photographs, and stay for as much or as little of the session as they wish.

45-minute performance

Duration: 45 minutes Price: approximately €27–35 Frequency: Selected dates

The 45-minute option — Lipizzaner Special Admission — is a condensed version of the full performance, suitable for visitors with limited time or children who may not sustain two hours of formal horse performance. The content is selected highlights rather than a complete programme.

Combined visit with the Imperial Treasury

The Spanish Riding School and the Imperial Treasury (Schatzkammer) are both inside the Hofburg complex and can be combined in a single morning — particularly if you book the morning exercise (10 am) and visit the Treasury afterwards.

The Lipizzaner horses: a brief history

The breed was developed in the 16th century at the stud farm at Lipizza (now Lipica, Slovenia, then part of the Habsburg empire). The selective crossing of Spanish, Italian and local Karst breeds created a horse prized for its intelligence, compactness, and trainability in the classical movements of Baroque horsemanship. Lipizzaners are born black or dark bay and gradually lighten to the characteristic grey-white over 6–10 years; a few remain dark-coloured their entire lives, and these are considered especially lucky.

During World War II, the horses were evacuated from Vienna to avoid the advancing front. The rescue operation involved cooperation between the US Army (under General George Patton, himself an equestrian) and the Austrian director of the school — an episode that became the subject of a Disney film in 1963 (The Miracle of the White Stallions). The horses returned to Vienna in 1955.

Honest tips

The touts at Michaelerplatz: Men in period-style costume near the Hofburg entrance offer to help visitors obtain Spanish Riding School tickets. They charge commissions and are not affiliated with the school. All tickets should be purchased directly through srs.at or authorised agents.

What to skip: The guided architectural tour is interesting for those with a strong interest in Baroque architecture but adds little for visitors attending a performance or exercise session. See the hall at its natural best during an actual session.

Photography: Permitted during morning exercise. Photography policy during full performances varies — check the current policy at time of booking. No flash in either case.

Where to sit: In the gallery, the best positions for both atmosphere and photography are at the corners of the long sides — you can see both the horses coming toward you and the full length of the hall. The imperial box end offers the most frontal view of the exercises.

Children: The 45-minute session is better for children under 10. Older children who have patience for formal equestrian performance often find the full show captivating.

Frequently asked questions about the Spanish Riding School

Is the Spanish Riding School closed in summer?

Yes. The Spanish Riding School is closed for performances and morning exercise throughout July and August. The Lipizzaner horses spend this period on the summer pasture at Piber stud farm in Styria. The school reopens in September.

What is the difference between a performance and morning exercise?

Performances are full shows (2 hours) with music, coordinated choreography and all horses performing together — comparable to a ballet on horseback. Morning exercise is a working session (2 hours) where individual horses and riders train. Morning exercise is less theatrical but often more interesting: you see the actual work of classical dressage at close range without the staging.

How far in advance should I book Spanish Riding School tickets?

Performance tickets sell out 4–6 weeks ahead for popular dates (weekends, holidays). Morning exercise sessions are easier to book and often available 1–2 weeks ahead. Both book through the official website only.

What is the 45-minute performance option?

The 45-minute Lipizzaner Special Admission ticket offers a shorter show without the full choreographed programme. It is cheaper and better suited to children or visitors with limited time — but the full 2-hour performance is the complete experience.

Are guided tours of the Spanish Riding School available?

Yes — architectural and general guided tours of the Winter Riding Hall are available when performances are not scheduled. These give access to the baroque hall itself without requiring you to attend a session.

Is the Spanish Riding School worth the price?

For most visitors who have any appreciation for equestrian art or Baroque performance tradition, yes. The Winter Riding Hall itself is one of the finest interiors in Vienna. Even the morning exercise, at €18–22, is a genuinely unusual cultural experience.
