About Vienna Spirit

Vienna Spirit is an independent travel guide dedicated to Vienna and its surroundings — the Wachau wine valley, the Vienna Woods, Burgenland, the Salzkammergut lakes, and the gateway capitals Bratislava, Budapest and Český Krumlov. Our mission is to plan the trip you actually want, honestly: which classical concert is real philharmonic and which is a Mozart-impersonator tourist trap, where the original Sachertorte is (and where it isn't), how the Wachau Danube cruise really works, and whether the Spanish Riding School is worth your morning.

Our approach

Every guide, itinerary and recommendation on this site is built on first-hand research. We name real cafés (Demel, Sacher, Landtmann, Hawelka, Central), real restaurants (Figlmüller, Plachutta, Gasthaus Pöschl), real concert venues (Musikverein, Staatsoper, Kursalon, Schönbrunn Orangery), and we quote real prices in euros. We give honest assessments of tourist traps — the Mozart-impersonator concert touts in front of the Staatsoper, the fake "Original" Sachertorte cafés, the Mozartkugel marketing confusion (the real one is from Salzburg), the VIE airport taxi rip-offs. If something is genuinely not worth it, we say so.

What we cover

Vienna Spirit covers Vienna and its environs in real depth: the imperial core (Schönbrunn, Hofburg, Stephansdom, Belvedere, the Sisi Museum), the classical music scene (with a comparison of every major venue), the museums (Kunsthistorisches, Albertina, Leopold, MUMOK), the coffee houses and Heuriger taverns of Grinzing and Nussdorf, and the day-trip regions other guides treat as paragraphs: the Wachau Valley (Melk, Krems, Dürnstein, Aggstein), the Vienna Woods (Mayerling, Heiligenkreuz, Baden), Burgenland (Eisenstadt, Esterházy, Neusiedlersee), Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut, and the gateway cities of Bratislava, Budapest and Český Krumlov.

How we earn revenue

Vienna Spirit is a free resource. We earn commissions when you book tours and activities through our affiliate links with GetYourGuide (partner ID LDXYA0P). This costs you nothing extra and helps us keep our guides free and up to date. We do not run our own tours, we have no financial relationship with hotels, restaurants or concert promoters, and we have no Booking.com / Expedia / Airbnb affiliations. GetYourGuide commissions are our only revenue stream — which is why we can be honest about which concert venues, palaces and day trips are worth your money. Read our full affiliate disclosure.

Available in 8 languages

Vienna Spirit publishes in English (canonical), German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Dutch and Polish. German is a priority because the largest visitor market for Vienna is the German-speaking audience (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) — and most English-language Vienna blogs simply ignore them. Our German content uses native phrasing (Wien, Schönbrunn, Wienerwald), not auto-translation.
